Sankofa Project
Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
The Sankofa Project under Energize Tacoma is a dynamic initiative aimed at amplifying Black voices, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering education through art and storytelling. The project is rooted in the West African principle of Sankofa, meaning "to go back and get it," symbolizing the importance of learning from the past to inform and enrich the present and future.
Origins: Representation Matters
The Sankofa Project began with Representation Matters in December 2023. This initiative was created to address the lack of diverse cultural representation in Downtown Tacoma, where only certain faiths and traditions were publicly acknowledged. Energize Tacoma responded by launching Representation Matters as an online learning page on Facebook, celebrating Kwanzaa as its first theme. This digital platform quickly grew, featuring notable figures, historical moments, and vital contributions by Black Americans. Through regular updates, it became a resource for the community to learn about Black history and culture, highlighting the achievements of Black leaders, artists, and changemakers.
Black Contemporaries Gallery
A cornerstone of the Sankofa Project is Black Contemporaries, a dedicated gallery space located within the Tacoma Urban League. This gallery showcases the work of local Black artists, offering them an invaluable platform to share their voices, stories, and creative talents with the Tacoma community. Black Contemporaries integrates educational technology, such as QR codes, so visitors can learn more about each artist, view their work in depth, and purchase pieces directly, providing financial support for these creators.
Through Black Contemporaries, the Sankofa Project fosters engagement with Black art and culture, ensuring that the work of these artists is accessible and celebrated. It also bridges the community with Black cultural expression, encouraging a deeper appreciation and understanding of diverse perspectives.
Ongoing Vision and Impact
Together, Representation Matters and Black Contemporaries form the backbone of the Sankofa Project, reinforcing Energize Tacoma’s commitment to preserving Black history and promoting inclusivity. The project hosts events, educational programs, and community art installations, ensuring that Black voices and stories are both seen and heard. These efforts underscore the value of cultural diversity and create spaces for learning, celebration, and connection across Tacoma.
